Why? Why do I insist my daughter NOT take the NCLB tests:

It is time we excuse the most severely disabled and find another solution for them.

There are two possibilities with my daughter: either she understands what is going on around her or she does not. It is not that "black and white" but let us assume it is. One thing that is not disputable is that at this time she has no repeatable, nor reliable, nor recognizable method of communication, especially when asked a direct question.

Remember, the test she takes is NOT standardized, it is CUSTOMIZED for her and even so, she will fail it.

If she does not understand

If she fully understands

  • No usable data will be obtained
  • A complete waste of the teacher's time
  • Loss of time from activities that would benefit her
  • Teacher attention diverted from others
  • Money spent on testing / preparation / scoring

  • Teacher attention diverted from others
  • Money spent on testing / preparation / scoring
  • Her incredible anxiety about needing to take an exam that cannot be passed
  • Her intense frustration at knowing an answer and not being able to answer it, even something as simple as touching the correct switch when in fact so much more is understood
  • Her stress and depression being told she will never graduate high school
  • Her loss of self-esteem, loss of thinking that she is worthy
  • Her loss of the will to even try

My daughter, her teacher, her school, and I should NOT be forced to participate in fraudulent testing. The outcome is known and predetermined.
